Manuscript evaluation

Who is this service for?

Authors who have finished drafting their novel and are looking for advice on the bigger picture aspects that might need improvement (and those that already work well!). This should take place before any more detailed line editing, copy-editing, or proofreading.

What’s included?

An editorial report that covers both the strengths and weaknesses of your manuscript in areas such as:

  • Premise
  • Plot
  • Structure
  • Characterisation
  • Dialogue
  • Setting
  • Point of view
  • Voice
  • Style and technical ability
  • Suitability for target audience
  • Marketability

This is an assessment of your manuscript, not a full developmental edit. I can make recommendations or suggestions for improvements where weaknesses are identified, but this service does not include any further time to discuss them with you.

The price depends on the length of the manuscript, charged at £6.50 per thousand words. A manuscript evaluation for a 60,000-word novel, for example, would be £390.

Authors who use this service are also entitled to a 10% discount on my copy-editing and proofreading services for the same manuscript.

“Kate is an excellent editor; timely, professional, and with fantastic feedback to any project. Her notes on my novel showed me story possibilities I had not considered, drove me to have a more dynamic cast of characters. Where I once felt like I was simply recounting the events of the story, Kate encouraged me to put myself in it, to ask deeper questions of the characters so I may find gems of truth hidden within the narrative. I absolutely cannot recommend her enough!”
