Hi, I’m Kate!
Before I decided to make editing and proofreading my full-time job, I worked as a policy advisor for the UK Government, advising Ministers on European and constitutional policy for almost a decade.
It taught me some valuable lessons about the power of writing, and the importance of getting it right.
Most importantly, I learned that well-written text builds trust with your audience – whether it’s your fiction readership or customers – by reassuring them that time and care has been put into what they’re reading. And that you’ll put that same time and care into everything else that you do.
My areas of non-fiction expertise include:
- UK Government and Westminster politics
- European Union and wider international relations (including Brexit)
- UK and EU Justice and Home Affairs
- UK and EU legislative procedure
- policy-making and influencing
Since starting my business, I have also specialised in some areas of fiction, including:
- speculative fiction
- dystopian fiction
While these two specialisms might seem quite disparate, I’ve found that my experience actually helps enormously in terms of world-building and politics in fiction. I’m always keen to work with writers who want to explore the challenges we face as a species. After all, politics is just future dystopia happening on the news.
I am also a huge fan of sci-fi / fantasy / graphic novels / games / all things geek. When I’m not editing, you can find me reading, writing, watching something new on Netflix or playing on my PS4.
I’m an entry-level member of the UK’s Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP). In addition to my experience, I’ve completed the following formal training courses:
- SfEP – P1: Proofreading
- SfEP – P2: Proofreading (with Merit)
- SfEP – CE1: Copy-editing
- SfEP – CE2: Copy-editing (with ‘Good’ marking)
- Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA) – Editing Graphic Novels
