What is a blurb? Why is it important?

A blurb is the bit of text on the back of a printed book, or on the sales page of an online bookstore, that tells readers what your book is all about.

After the cover and title, it’s one of the first parts of your book potential readers will see. And if they get as far as reading it, it’s likely to be the deciding factor in whether they choose to purchase your book or not.

It’s a sales pitch that shouldn’t feel too much like one – giving enough information that readers feel confident your book is what they’re looking for, but not so much that they no longer feel the need to read it (or get bored partway through!). It also needs to feel like your book, setting the mood for your story.

Over the years, I’ve realised that lots of authors actually find it quite challenging to condense their novels down into the key points required for a short, effective blurb. That’s completely understandable – after all, you’ve probably just spent months or even years struggling to add to your word count!

But I can help with that.

If I’ve already edited your book, I can use my knowledge of your manuscript to write a blurb that hits all the right notes to appeal to potential readers.

What’s included in this service?

This service is an add-on service, and can be included when I edit your book (whether it’s developmental editing, line editing, copyediting, or a final proofread). This is because writing a good blurb requires me to have read the whole manuscript – offering this service on books I’ll be reading as part of another service means I only have to charge for the additional time needed to compose the blurb (rather than the time needed to read the book as well!).

You’ll receive a Word document containing a blurb that’s tailored to your book and your target audience (usually around three to five paragraphs long). The service also includes one revision, so you can send back any comments you have on this first draft, and I’ll update/revise/rewrite the blurb as needed.
