Developmental feedback on comics and graphic novels

What is developmental feedback?

Developmental feedback covers all the bigger-picture aspects of your story, including plot, characters, dialogue, emotional impact, and pacing, as well as suitability for your target audience. It’s all about bringing out the best in your story and characters, and ensuring they appeal to readers in your genre.

The type and format of the feedback will depend on whether I’m reviewing a beat sheet, full script, or a collection of notes. But it might, for example, flag that your main character doesn’t seem to learn or develop over the course of the story and suggest some ways you might create a more satisfying character arc. It might suggest you cut back your text to let the visuals tell the story. Or it might suggest cutting or shortening some sequences to keep the pace up.

What’s included in this service?

You’ll receive comments and suggestions on the material you provide, along with general comments that cover both the strengths and weaknesses of the story.

Note that developmental feedback does not include any sentence-level corrections to the text, such as you’d get with line and copyediting or proofreading. The focus is exclusively on the bigger picture. After all there’s no point moving commas around if you might still decide to remove the whole sequence!

“Kate worked through the whole comic and weeded out the awkward parts and dialogue! It was nerve wracking letting someone read ‘The Snow Cat Prince’ for the first time that wasn’t one of my family members, but Kate was extremely professional, quick and kind.”
