Proofreading for comics and graphic novels

What is proofreading?

Proofreading is the very last round of editing before publication – a final quality-control check once your artwork and lettering is in place.

It’s going over both the text and the artwork of your comic with a fine-toothed comb, finding any lingering typos or formatting problems. That might be spotting typos, lettering that extends outside of your balloons, or clothing that mysteriously changes colours between pages.

What’s included in this service?

This is a detailed panel-by-panel, letter-by-letter check addressing the following:

  • Spelling
  • Punctuation
  • Grammar
  • Adherence to conventions specific to comics
  • Formatting
  • Layout
  • Continuity
  • Checking against script, if required.

I’ll highlight and make corrections on a PDF of your comic using the commenting tools in Adobe Acrobat.

I’ll also include a style sheet recording key style decisions (“OK” vs “okay” etc.) to help ensure consistency throughout. This style sheet is especially useful if your comic is part of a planned series or shared universe as it can be used to ensure consistency with all of the future ones too!

What does a proofread comic look like?

See below an example of a PDF comic with the types of corrections and comments I might make during a proofread.

You may need to hover over the corrections and highlights to read my comments. You can also download the file using the link below it.

TESTIMONIAL

“I know the importance of having a professional look at my work before sending to the printers. I spent weeks trying to find a proofreader that met my needs and was about to give up when I found Kate in a google search. She was perfectly aligned with the skillset I needed, and I was blown away by the quality of her work. She went above and beyond anything I was expecting. Her suggestions showed how well she understand the story and what I was trying to say. There wasn’t one suggestion she made that I did not change. It has been a pleasure to work with her and any work that I do in the future will immediately go to her. I can’t recommend her enough.”
